In fact, all change is big change. We talk a lot within the F5 community about pivoting (e.g. changing the way you think/approach/respond to life) versus leaping (e.g. career change, quitting your job). The comparison is not in the spirit of a better/worse judgment, but as an offering of what might be the next step – after noticing thoughts like, “This job function no longer works for me – did it ever?” and feelings like resentment and frustration.
Once you’re armed with awareness, it can take a lot of courage to actually take action – to make a change – but your chances increase infinitely if you tell someone what you want. (Disclaimer: this is code for vulnerability. You’ve been warned/encouraged!)
Chris Gethard, a comedian and host of Beautiful/Anonymous, a podcast that showcases “beautiful stories from anonymous people” gets the frustrated feeling and believes in the power of sharing. The premise of his show is “1 phone call. 1 hour. No names. No holds barred.” Profiled recently on This American Life, Chris talked to a man whose job was so life-draining that he literally couldn’t get himself fired, nor could he get himself taking any action to affect change. As a listener, you can feel your hope increase as the hour goes on – this man is going to quit! He’s going to follow his dreams!
Does he? The short answer: yes, but not right away, and not perfectly (we hope you’re not surprised). Give it a listen and then go scream in a parking lot. Trust us.
